STARDIVER FOUR, CHAPTER 29, STONE REGROUPS

CHAPTER 29
STONE REGROUPS

“The double crossing, cheating, slime bucket.” Stone picked up the remains of a chair.  He swung it over his head and smashed the communications monitor, sparks and smoke came out. “Marx, that fungus footed sewage tripe!”

None of the men standing around understood Stone’s rage. They stood gaping at him.

“Don’t you get it? You are all a bunch of dull-witted I know not whats.  I am supposed to capture the Command center. You, stupid idiots, screwed up and went running through the ship like a bunch of school girls chasing butterflies. Get everybody together.  Find the rest of our men and meet up at the Command Center.”

“But sir, Unit Leader Marx already captured it.”

“Well, we will just capture it back. And no prisoners, none of Marx's men walk out alive.”

“Why?” another scar-faced pirate asked. “The fighting is done, we won.”

Stone could barely hold himself back. “You idiots, Marx won, I have to win.  Whoever takes the command center gets the biggest share of the payout. It’s in the Red Book. And it guarantees they can claim command of the ship as their own.  We don’t want to be second to Marx do we? We don’t want to be taking orders from a soldier of fortune like him.  We need to be in power. ME! US! ME!”

“What can we do?” Asked the fat pirate.

“We kill them all. They won’t expect that and we outnumber them. So don’t just stand there you dumb faced cows. Go!” The men began to move up the corridor in a slump-shouldered group.

The speakers all over the ship beeped. “This is a message from Captain Price.  Cease firing, surrender has taken place. All who are defending the ship are to give up their weapons and assemble at the common room.”

Another beep. “This is Commander Marx. We have successfully captured the ship. Cease fire and treat the crew and civilians with respect. All units will receive further instructions on secured channels.

Whitey felt only a slight relief at the news. "OK, make your way to the common room. I am going to find Commander Marx and inform him we are done with the Liberation and arrange to draw our pay."

Whitey looked at his men, like a father would, with both pride and concern. He thought they looked tired and thin. "You guys look like hell." He sighed, "Men, the fighting may be over but the danger is not.  We are in league with criminals and madmen. Keep your guard up at all times.  Do not let the Lunacy Brotherhood get the drop on you. And keep an eye out for more deathbots.”  He turned and headed for the command center, the men went another way.

Whitey stopped after few yards and called back. "And boys," They stopped as if one mind controlled them. Turning the tired men were welcomed by Whitey's rare smile. "Well done, the lot of you. Well done." His head gave a sharp nod.

The men seemed to straighten and tighten; their heads were a little higher, and their stride was more deliberate as the group made their way up to the common room.
