STARDIVER FOUR, CHAPTER 24 OLLIE TASTES BLOOD

CHAPTER 24
OLLIE TASTES BLOOD

The pirate stood in the sick bay door as if he was its door. He took aim at Tom, “I guess you’ll be first, kid.”

Tom stared at the silver laser gun. He could not believe it; he was about to die. He could not move or breathe and his vision seemed to narrow around him.; “Oh Mom, Dad, I’ll never see you again.”

The pirate didn't know what happened. He was rammed in the chest by a snarling monster; the blow threw him onto his back. The guns flipped out of his hands and clattered on the floor. His vision was filled with the snout of some beast with lots of long white teeth flashing and snapping in his face.

Ollie couldn't bite through the space armor so he tore at the prate’s face. The man kicked with his feet. He tried to get at Ollie’s teeth with his hands, but quickly pulled back bloodied fingers. Ollie kept up his wild rampage.  The taste of blood added to his fury. Snarling, he slashed at the man’s face again and again. The pirate tried to punch Ollie and knock him off but the pain only increased Ollie’s wrath. At last, the pirate rolled onto his hands and knees. He crawled out to the corridor while Ollie tore at his ear. A crowd of pirates running past fell over him. They got up and pulled him to his shaky feet and dashed up the corridor.

Ollie was satisfied. His wolf spirit was in command of his heart. He howled as only a wolf could, an ancient, wild, howl. He was the king of the pack, and would defend his pack, especially Tom. Ollie looked around and found Tom hiding under a table with a nurse.

“Ollie you’re the greatest.” Tom hugged him. “You saved all of our lives.” Ollie licked Tom’s face. He wanted to tell Tom that he would do anything for him. The silver laser gun was on the floor. Ollie lifted up his leg and wet it until it laid in a yellow puddle, sparks flashing from its insides. It was like a trophy and part of Ollie’s territory.  Ollie felt good.

“At least they will stay away from Sick Bay for a while.” The doctor said.“ But son, you should get Ollie to an escape pod, get him out of here. Men like that don’t appreciate their faces getting chewed up. When he comes back he’ll kill Ollie or worse.”

Tom peered out into the corridor; an escape pod was not far away. The corridor was empty of fighting now since the battle had passed by to the deeper parts of the huge ship. The faint sound of weapons and the cries of fighting men were far off. A thin haze of whitish smoke moved slowly past in the air. The debris of battle littered everywhere; discarded weapons, shields, and armor was scattered across the floor amid trash. The walls were splattered with black burns and scarred with gashes.

He stepped into the corridor. The portal to the escape pod was only a few dozen yards away. Escape. Run away. The idea never occurred to him before, but now, maybe now he should run away. “Dear God, Please show me what to do. Help me to know what is right. Oh, Lord, I am so confused.” The prayer was short, heart deep and true.

Dr. Johnson had just said he should, so it would not be like he was doing something without permission.  Tom turned and looked back at sick bay, it was all confusion, it looked like a school cafeteria after a food fight gone bad. The doctor and nurses were fighting a different battle, a battle to save lives. Roger’s still body was on a table with tubes and wires going into his arm and a plastic mask over his face. Tom wanted to run away but it would be wrong. “They need me.” He thought. “Especially with the medical robots shorted out. I said I would help. It would be wrong to leave now.”

Tom  walked back into the Sick Bay.  “Dr. Johnson, My place is here.”
