STARDIVER FOUR, CHAPTER 18, NO SHOW STONE

CHAPTER 18
NO SHOW STONE

“Stone!” Whitey was shouting into his collar radio. Shouting, not only because of the noise but because it was a relief to yell at Stone. “Do you hear me? We have taken the airlock and need support. Can you get to one of the aft airlocks? And come in behind these guys?”

“I don’t think so.” Stone reclined on a padded seat with his black boots stretched out in front of him so he can admire their shine. “Our transport is under heavy rocket attack and we are trying another approach.” He winked with his one eye at his men and smiled slyly. ”What?" He paused. “Whitey, it seems we have been hit in a stabilizing thruster. We may be a little late to the party- if you know what I mean.” I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Captain Stone out.” He touched the button on his collar and ended the link.

“I’m going to teach that jerk a lesson,” Whitey growled.

“No support from Stone I guess.” Bill was pressed against a wall next to Whitey. “Where do these Space Cops keep coming from?”

Whitey looked at the end of the hall. It was a horror. It entered a corridor that was filling up with wounded and still men. “We were sent into a trap. Bill. It might be time to cut our losses and get out of here.”

A voice came over the ship's intercoms. “We need help at airlock four. We are under attack!”

Whitey touched his collar. "Central Command, we are holding an air lock, send reinforcements. We have a beachhead."

Whitey listened; not to the voice of the intercom but the sounds of firing. It was like a song to him and he sensed the music was slowing, fewer shots were firing, fewer men were yelling.

“Bill, on my mark take Unit B out the hall and up the corridor to airlock four. I will take unit A and D out the hall and down to airlock two.” Whitey looked over Bill's head to the corridor judging the fighting.

"Boss, you know they are using live rounds and set weapons to kill, not stun like we are. I know you ordered us to use soft rounds but it would even things out a bit if we were firing hot."

"No, Bill. I guarantee there will be war crimes trials after this is over. We need to come out clean as possible. Besides, if we switch sides it would be easier if we didn't kill off the side we switch to."

"I like a man with an eye on the profit margin."

“Business as usual, Bill. OK, Now's the time to go. Take airlock four.”

Whitey could feel the battle, it was like a sixth sense in his gut. When it seemed it could not get any more intense he ordered the charge. Dozens of percussion bombs and flash grenades filled the corridor and a vengeful charge by Whitey’s Raiders surged through. Their armor taking the pounding of blasters and burns by lasers as they forced the defenders back.
